Gene V. Smith, 90, of Amarillo, died Friday, December 28, 2018. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Monday at First Baptist Church of Dimmitt, 1201 Western Circle Dr. with Coby Gilbreath officiating. Burial will be at Castro Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3:00-4:00 pm Sunday at Cox Funeral Home, 4180 Canyon Dr. in Amarillo. Gene was born December 8, 1928 in El Reno, Oklahoma to Emory and LaVina Bell Smith. He graduated from high school in Pomona, California. Gene married Mary DeLozier in Dimmitt in 1951. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Gene went into business with his father as an auto mechanic. In 1967, Gene took over ownership of Dimmitt Upholstery and Garage. He retired in 1995. After retirement, Gene and Mary enjoyed traveling in their RV. They spent winter months in Uvalde, and summer months in Buena Vista, CO. They were longtime active members of First Baptist Church of Dimmitt. They had been attending Arden Road Baptist Church, since moving to Amarillo in 2012. In his spare time, Gene was an avid fisherman and loved playing golf. He also enjoyed wood carving, painting, and working with stained glass. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Robert Smith. Survivors include his wife, Mary Smith of Amarillo; a daughter, Beverly Stephens and husband Brent of Groom; three sons, Kenny Smith and wife Andrea of Littleton, CO, Gary Smith and wife Janet of Goldendale, WA, and Jim Smith and wife Lesley of Amarillo; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The family suggests memorials be made to Gene and Mary’s “church away from home”, Mountain Heights Baptist Church, 28390 CR 317, Buena Vista, CO 81211.
